Originally a paving tile design, this connection with the artisan trade led the Diamond to represent one of the four major feudal at the time, the Merchant class, who supplied material goods to the people. Also, merchants, money, and diamonds go rather well together. When the Parisians of feudal era France drew up the first playing cards and assigned different meanings to them, they fashioned the Queen of Hearts card after the Biblical heroine Judith. She was a Hebrew widow whose people were under attack by the Assyrians, and so she decided to infiltrate the enemy camp as a maid and ingratiate herself with the Assyrian king, Holofernes. She gained his trust, and waiting one night until the king was asleep with drink she crept into his tent and decapitated him, sending his head back to her people and causing the enemy army to withdraw.... I wonder how much of the Old Testament Lewis Carroll was reading when he famously attached the motto, 'Off with their heads!'; to his own Queen of Hearts centuries later.... Hrrrmmmm....

Ace of Spades. Non-recolorable. In playing cards, the Spades Suit, along with the Clubs, Hearts and Diamonds, is believed to be medieval French in origin. Spade in this sense of the word does not refer to the shovel-like agricultural spade that farmers use. Instead, 'spade' is derived from the Italian word 'spada', meaning 'sword'. In the feudal times, swords and other implementrs of war were incredibly expensive, and usually only the nobility could afford such august weapons and their maintenance, and so, the Suit of Swords came to represent the Nobility class, including the military and especially royals. The playing cards deck share a history with the Tarot deck, and the Suit of Spades thus corresponds to the Swords Suit, which rules Air and the mind; the North, and the Zodiac signs Gemini, Libra and Aquarius.

Ace of Clubs. Non-recolorable. In playing cards, the Clubs Suit, along with the Diamonds, Hearts and Spades, is believed to be medieval French in origin. In many countries the Club represented the cudgel, baton, club, or any other blunt-edged tool commonly used in feudal times on the fields and as weapons by the Peasant class, who were forbidden to carry swords, signs of the nobility. It is commonly called a Clover in other languages, and keeps its association with agriculture.
