Calliope was named for the memories triggered by it's shape resembling an oldfashioned fairground favourite - the merry-go-round [aka carousel, roundabout, hurdy-gurdy and probably others I'm not aware of] - and, by association, the magnificent steam-driven music maker that most often provided the background to the rides - the Calliope. It also somewhat resembles the squat, 8-sided biscuit barrel that used to sit on my granny's kitchen bench - but that's a story for another day.
This Calliope doesn't make music itself, but situated as it is amongst trees and shrubs, bird music is always to be heard. The exterior shape makes for some interesting room dimensions, but you will find that they work nicely, within the bounds of the octagonal design.
The front door opens into a wide hallway which extends the width of the ground floor - with a small sunroom at the extreme rear. To the left of the entry is a livingroom, furnished for comfort and ease; to the right, the kitchen and meals area, roomy and well equipped for any culinary undertaking. A full bathroom completes the lower level.
Upstairs - with the choice of staircases at front or rear - we will find 4 bedrooms and another 2 bathrooms, all opening from the tiled landing. Three of the bedrooms are doubles, the other, a single. The bathrooms are handily placed on either side of the house, providing facilities for two bedrooms each. A small exercise space with treadmill, is tucked in behind the front stairwell and next to the single bedroom.
All heavy traffic and wet areas are tiled, living and bedrooms are carpeted.
Calliope will not appeal to everyone, but those who are adventurous enough to take a second look will find it rewarding.
PS Before someone takes me to task about the term 'hurdy-gurdy', I should explain that in the forties when I was growing up, a hurdy-gurdy was a more daring version of a carousel, where riders sat on seats like swings and were hurtled around in a circle and spun out wide when the machine picked up speed. I was not referring to the musical instrument of the same name LOL
